Stuff Dogs Like #3: Other people’s chow

27 Apr

Dogs like other people’s chow. They think whatever it is that you have, it’s going to be a much more tasty delight than what they have. Sometimes this is true, like when you have pepperoni pizza oozing with fatty melted cheese and dripping with red meat grease, on this occasion, your hound would probably like your food better than his dried shriveled health food biscuits. But sometimes you have a grape, and your pooch just doesn’t grasp that not all of our food is junk food.

Sometimes I like to prove this to my dog, by offering him said grape. His eyes sparkle as his massive tongue gently scoops it from my hand, but then his jaw lengthens and his jowls suck in in what can only be described as a ‘dog gag face’ as he slowly realises this is worse than his food. There’s not even a crunch and no hint of any animal byproduct in it. And then the grape pops back out in its complete form without a single piercing mark. The remarkable thing is that after this horrible experience, he quickly returns to droopy eyed hovering begging stance, as if the previous few moments had been an exception or a blip and that the next thing to be offered will be something more delicious like bacon.
